What is Turntable Zikka?
Turntable Zikka is a free browser-based DJ turntable simulator. It generates a live drum beat and lets you scratch a virtual vinyl record to create real-time synthesized "zikka" sounds. No signup, no downloads — it runs entirely in your browser. Part of a collection of free audio tools at arcade.pirillo.com.
Is it free?
Yes — completely free with no hidden limits, no account required, and no feature gates. Everything runs locally on your device.
How do I use it?
Click "Drop the Needle" to start. The beat plays automatically. Click the tonearm base to drop or lift the needle. Then click and drag the vinyl record — the scratch synth responds to your drag speed and direction. Use the NEW BEAT and NEW SOUND buttons to randomize the rhythm and synth voice.
Does it collect my data?
No. Everything runs locally in your browser using the Web Audio API and Tone.js. There are no servers, no uploads, and no tracking beyond basic anonymous page analytics.
What is the "zikka" sound?
The zikka is a synthesized scratch effect generated in real time by an oscillator routed through a filter and distortion. Its pitch and volume respond to how fast you drag the record — fast drags produce high-pitched, loud scratches; slow drags produce low rumbles. Every time you hit NEW SOUND, the waveform, filter type, distortion, and frequency range are randomized for a completely different texture.
What browsers does it work on?
Any modern browser that supports the Web Audio API — Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge all work. Chrome tends to have the best Web Audio performance. Works on desktop and mobile, though scratching is easier with a mouse or trackpad.
Are there other music apps like this?
Yes — check out Tenori-Online for a grid-based sequencer, LiveBeat for a live drum machine, or Theremin to play music with mouse movement. All free, all browser-based.
