Glyph Extractor

by Chris Pirillo

What is this?

A browser-based tool that isolates individual handwritten characters from scanned images. It detects each glyph, removes background noise and ruled lines, and exports clean, high-resolution PNGs.

Who is it for?

Anyone making a handwritten font, building a character recognition dataset, or preserving their handwriting digitally. Designers, type nerds, educators, hobbyists.

How to use it

1. Write your characters on paper (or download the template below).
2. Scan or photograph the pages.
3. Drop the images into this app.
4. Adjust the tuning sliders if needed.
5. Rename glyphs and export as ZIP or PNG.

Tips

Use a thick, dark pen on white unlined paper for best results. If using lined paper, the Blue Suppress slider helps remove ruled lines. Space characters apart so they don't merge.
