Frequently Asked Questions

What is BrickGen?

BrickGen is a free 3D generative brick art toy that runs in your browser. Watch algorithmic builders create mandalas, crystals, spiral towers, cityscapes, and wave fields from interlocking bricks — or place bricks yourself on a 32x32 baseplate. Every generation is unique. No account, no download.

How do I place and remove bricks?

Left-click (or tap on mobile) to place a brick. Right-click (or long-press) to remove. R to rotate, Ctrl+Z to undo, Ctrl+Shift+Z to redo. Keys 1-7 select brick sizes. Scroll to zoom, click-drag to orbit. Snap button captures a 4K screenshot.

Can I save and share my builds?

Use the Save button in the toolbar to export your build as a JSON file. Share that file with anyone — they can load it using the Load button to see your creation in their browser. Everything runs client-side, no account needed.

What are the generative modes?

Five algorithmic builders create unique structures every time: Mandala (radially symmetric patterns), Spiral Tower (helical constructions), Crystal (faceted mineral formations), Wave Field (sine-wave terrain), and Random City (procedural urban scenes with roads, buildings, and parks). Click the same mode again or hit the randomize button for a new generation.

Does this work on mobile?

BrickGen works on any device with WebGL support. Desktop offers the best experience with mouse controls for precise brick placement. On mobile, you can explore generative builds, orbit the camera, switch modes, and adjust settings. Brick placement is optimized for mouse input.

Is my data stored anywhere?

No. Everything runs entirely in your browser. No data is sent to any server, no account is required, and nothing is tracked beyond standard analytics. Your builds only exist locally unless you export them.

What do the settings control?

The settings panel lets you fine-tune PBR material properties (roughness, metalness, clearcoat), lighting (key, fill, rim lights with color and shadow controls), sun position, bloom post-processing, environment sky presets, baseplate color, tone mapping, and exposure. Camera position readouts are shown at the bottom.

Is BrickGen a LEGO alternative?

BrickGen is a creative toy, not a LEGO CAD tool. If you need real brick inventories and building instructions, try BrickLink Studio or Mecabricks. BrickGen is for casual creative expression — watching generative art unfold in brick form, tinkering with colors and lighting, and building for the fun of it.

Can I use BrickGen as a relaxing creative activity?

That is exactly what it is for. Pick a generative mode, hit randomize, orbit the camera, adjust the sky and lighting, and watch unique brick structures assemble with satisfying snap sounds. There are no scores, timers, or goals — just creative play.
